Yesterday my mom turned sixty years old and so did most of her makeup. Ha! I’m just kidding, Mom! I love ya. I wish you the happiest of birthdays! Recently we did a little mini makeup overhaul and went through her old makeup. We threw away A LOT of stuff, replaced a few things, and cleaned up her storage.
So here’s the question: How long long are you supposed to keep makeup? Well, according to WebMD:
Mascara – 3-4 months. Every time you put the wand back into the tube, you’re letting in bacteria.
Liquid Foundation– 1 year
Lip Gloss – 6 months
Lipstick – 1 year
Powders -18 months-2 years
Marie Claire says bronzers, blushes and face powder can be kept up to 18 months. You can protect them by closing the compact or twisting the lid shut after use to avoid oxidation. Also, use clean makeup brushes!
They also say eyeliner can be kept three months to three years. That seems like a wide range! Liquid eyeliners have the same bacteria-prone formula and packaging as mascaras, while pencil eyeliners have greater lasting power because as you sharpen them you remove bacteria that you pick up from using it on your eyes.
Using old makeup could result in product reformulation, or worse, bacteria buildup. So as difficult as it may be to throw away that expensive makeup, it’s necessary. I know I’m guilty of this when it comes to a few products. I have the hardest time throwing away a Becca highlighter I bought three years ago, and also a few MAC products that weren’t right for me. They were so expensive! Can I just display them?? I’m pretty good when it comes to using up mascaras, lip products and foundation. I’m constantly putting on lipstick or lip gloss! I have a harder time using powder, blush and bronzer in a timely manner.
My mom hasn’t used her Maybelline Expert Eyes blue eyeliner in a timely manner. She told me she bought this in college in 1984! How could I throw this away? At this point it’s historic! 🙂 And who doesn’t love 80’s blue eye makeup! I’m all about it.
My mom doesn’t wear a lot of makeup, but there are two items I’ve always remembered her wearing ever since I was a little girl. Maybelline Great Lash and Cover Girl powder. The scent of the powder reminds me of her. Did you know Great Lash is 40 years old?!
My mom is going to be using some new makeup products now -Maybelline BB cream, Loreal Lash Paradise, NYX cream blush, Elf shimmer palette, Tarte Pro Glow palette and a few cheaper eye palettes from TJ Maxx. I love Loreal Lash Paradise and the Maybelline BB cream.
Now it’s time for you to confess – what’s the oldest makeup product you own?
